Bastrop, LA – (4/24/2024) – After careful consideration, the Morehouse General Hospital Board of Directors has announced the planned closure of the Hope Unit, Cypress Bend Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and the Behavioral Health Clinic in April and May of 2024. The Morehouse General Hospital Board and leadership arrived at this difficult decision during a recent Board meeting.
With changes in the healthcare industry, Morehouse General Hospital—like many other rural and community hospitals across the country—is forced to make difficult decisions like this for the greater good of the hospital.
“The need for this change is unfortunate, yet we have a fiduciary responsibility for the health and well-being of our hospital” said Robert Green, Morehouse General Hospital Board Chair. “We are committed to meeting the health needs of our community, reaching a century of service, and beyond”.
The closures at Morehouse General Hospital include the Hope Unit, a 10-bed Geri-Psychiatric inpatient Unit, Cypress Bend IOP, an intensive outpatient program, and the Behavioral Health clinic, an outpatient clinic. The three services combined reported an annualized loss of $850,000.
Since Morehouse General Hospital opened over 90 years ago, the healthcare industry has experienced a significant shift from inpatient to outpatient utilization, as well as reductions in reimbursement for services, due to legal and regulatory changes.
